Gluten-Free Chocolate Bars in Canada, Explained
Good news if you're avoiding gluten: plenty of classic chocolate bars are naturally gluten-free. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Almond Joy, Mounds, Payday and plain Hershey's bars all skip the wheat. The ones to watch are bars built around a wafer, cookie, biscuit or malt, like Kit Kat and Twix. Here's the full list, shipped across Canada.
Everything below is pulled from our gluten-free chocolate collection at Candy Funhouse®. One important note up front: always check the label. Recipes change, and cross-contamination can happen, so if you have celiac disease, confirm the packaging before you dig in.
Disclaimer: This article is general information, not medical or dietary advice. The gluten-free status below reflects what each manufacturer currently states, and formulas and facilities can change. Candy Funhouse can't guarantee any product's gluten-free status, so always confirm the current packaging, especially if you have celiac disease.
Three quick rules before you shop:
- Check THIS package. Brands reformulate, and a product that was gluten-free last year may not be.
- Watch seasonal shapes. Reese's and similar holiday-shaped versions can differ from the standard bar.
- Butterfinger yes, Butterfinger Crisp no. Small name difference, big ingredient difference.
TL;DR: Most plain chocolate and peanut-based bars are gluten-free: Reese's Cups, Almond Joy, Mounds, Payday, Butterfinger, York Peppermint Patties, Milk Duds and plain Hershey's bars. Avoid anything with a wafer, cookie, biscuit, pretzel or malt (Kit Kat, Twix, Whoppers). Always check the label, and shop the gluten-free chocolate collection at Candy Funhouse.
What Chocolate Bars Are Gluten-Free?
A chocolate bar is usually gluten-free when it's just chocolate plus things like peanuts, caramel, coconut, nougat or crisped rice without malt. Most of the picks below come straight from the manufacturers' own gluten-free lists (Hershey publishes a full one). Here are the gluten-free favourites we carry:
- Reese's Peanut Butter Cups - the gold standard, just peanut butter and chocolate. Hershey lists most standard cups and Reese's Pieces as gluten-free, but watch the seasonal shapes and always check the package.
- Almond Joy - coconut, almond and milk chocolate. Hershey lists the bars as gluten-free (Almond Joy Pieces are the exception)
- Mounds - dark chocolate and coconut, the simpler cousin of Almond Joy.
- Payday - salted peanuts around a sweet, nougat-like caramel centre, and gluten-free.
- Butterfinger - the standard bar's crispy peanut-butter centre. Butterfinger says the standard bar is gluten-free. One exception: Butterfinger Crisp is not.
- York Peppermint Pattie - cool peppermint cream in dark chocolate, a clean gluten-free pick.
- Milk Duds - chewy caramel in a chocolate shell, great for the movies.
- Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar - the standard 1.55oz Hershey's Milk Chocolate bar is the size Hershey labels gluten-free. Skip the Cookies 'n' Creme version.
- Charleston Chew - fluffy nougat dipped in chocolate. Tootsie says all its candy, including Charleston Chew, is gluten-free.
- Raisinets - chocolate-covered raisins, listed as gluten-free snack-size classic.
- Reese's Pieces - the peanut-butter candies, gluten-free and poppable.

Which Chocolate Bars Are NOT Gluten-Free?
The rule of thumb: if a bar has a wafer, cookie, biscuit, pretzel or malt, treat it as a red flag, those usually contain gluten (though gluten-free substitutes do exist, so the label is still the final word). Common ones to avoid:
- Kit Kat and other wafer bars (the wafer is made with wheat).
- Twix (the biscuit base contains wheat).
- Whoppers and Maltesers (malt is made from barley).
- Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme and any bar with cookie pieces.
- Pretzel-filled bars like Take 5 or Flipz.

Are Reese's gluten-free?
Hershey lists most standard Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Big Cups and Reese's Pieces as gluten-free, since they're made from chocolate and peanut butter with no wheat. Seasonal shapes and newer inclusions can differ, so check each package.

Hershey lists its plain 1.55oz milk chocolate bar as gluten-free. The exception is any Hershey's product with cookie or wafer pieces, like Cookies 'n' Creme, which contains wheat.
